THIS Old Dog Learned a New Trick!

Filed under: "hmmmmm . . ", Things that make me say — Badrose at 12:38 pm on Wednesday, February 14, 2007

I go to Wikipedia to GET information, certainly not because I think I have some knowledge to impart. This is why I’ve never hit the edit link under an entry. According to General G. Dog, others in the Virginia Blogosphere are hitting that edit key.

Go on over and learn how to do it. I don’t know if I’ll ever need this information . . . especially now that I know that if I try to pull a sneaky edit that my ISP might show up as proof that I was the dirty dog . . . but it’s still interesting . . . unless, of course, the photos on GGD’s site are the products of his Photoshopping skills . . .

Better hurry before it disappears . . .

Sadly, Badrose, what GGD found was not a product of his photoshopping. I was shocked to find that ANYONE could go in to edit a page, and saddened to hear it was being manipulated for political purposes. Which brings to mind the question … is that considered a part of ethical blogging? I’m glad GGD brought it to light so we can now look for the source.

Shocked? No kidding? Were you really shocked? Do you have any familiarity with what Wikepedia is? The very first words, at the top of their Hope Page, are: “Welcome to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia that anyone can edit.”

Along the same lines, I was recently shocked to learn that there was gambling going on at cockfights. Who knew?

I knew that the entries could be edited, I just didn’t know that the editing process was so easy and immediate. I thought there was a little room full of eggheads that approved the entries before they were published.

Wiki, like any tool, depends on the intent of the user. If I understand BVBL correctly, (http://www.bvbl.net/?p=720) he appears to be saying it’s okay to use Wiki as a political tool, if done correctly. Like using a butter knife instead of a flathead screwdriver?
