Suppose you knew of someone that had recently been diagnosed with an incurable, potentially fatal disease. Even though you don’t personally know this person, being the kind-hearted, gentle soul you are, you send a note of encouragement anyway. Then suppose your note of support was acknowledged by a request for money. Wouldn’t you think that’s tacky?

Agreed, but it’s working for them. Don’t be surprised if more spouses of candidates are diagnosed between now and November 2008!

Seems interesting enough. Turns out… When you go to John Edwards’ campaign site, you are offered the opportunity to send them a note of encouragement for their fight against Mrs. Edwards’ incurable cancer.

Yeah, I have a real problem with this as well. I wonder if it’s been brought to Edwards’ attention that his staff did this? Ultimately, he is responsible for what they do. Thinking back on his standing orders that any attempt to invoke the death of his son in a campaign context is immediate cause for being fired from the campaign, I find it hard to believe that John Edwards would have approved this. I hope he puts a stop to it right away.
