Sunday Morning Will Never Be The Same

When Elvis died, my mother went into mourning.  I didn’t understand how she could feel so sad about “losing” someone she never had.  She’d never met him, never even went to a concert, yet she grieved daily for more than a week.

I understand it now.

Godspeed.

Andrea Mitchell is real stupid, sort of, bordering on elitist windbag, sort of…

1) It’s a good thing that my dad and his buddies (as well as most people I know) don’t watch MSNBC.

2) Andrea probably best keep her bony ass out of the Bristol Mall.

Sheesh. Some people marry a Fed Chairman and think they own the world.

(Okay, three thoughts came to mind.)

Jeff Frederick is New Chairman of RPV

Congratulations, Jeff!  (I think.)

John Hager conceded.

That’s all I know.  Except for it’s crazy loud at the convention and that if you ever need to borrow a cell phone, ask Jim Gilmore’s son, Ashley.

Thanks, Ashley!  (I think.)

Gilmore SQUEAKS by Marshall

Filed under: National, Virginia — Badrose at 1:16 pm on Saturday, May 31, 2008

Instead of being in Richmond this weekend having a big time with my fellow political bloggers at the RPV convention, I’m home hearing about it via borrowed cell phones.  Seems most bloggers batteries gave out before the convention started.  Business matters kept me in Martinsville but at least I have WiFi!

Anyway, I’ve just been informed that Jim Gilmore (5,218 votes) has narrowly beaten Bob Marshall (5,156 votes) for the unenviable opportunity to run against Mark Warner for Virginia’s junior senator.  This is assuming that Warner doesn’t get asked to go to the Vice-Presidential Prom with Barack (think CHANEL) Obama.

Sorry folks, I just can’t get a woody for any of these guys.  While I prefer Gilmore over the other two choices (much more over Marshall) this race interests me about as much as grits with no cheese.

Hey!  Ham Sandwich would make a great Senator!

Stay tuned.  I should be getting the exciting results of the RPV Chairman vote, soon.  The choices are Jeff Frederick and John Hager.

Back to laundry detail…

SUBWAY Could Use A (Home-Schooled) Proofreader!

SWAC GIRL has an excellent write-up about this story: SUBWAY has launched a writing contest that specifically EXCLUDES home schooled children. Ironically, it has misspelled words (most conspicuous is basket) on the contest Web Site! Lynn sees their omission as plain discrimination.

American Thinker has another interesting take: Given that so many winners of the Scripps National Spelling Bee have been home schooled students, Subway was trying to avoid the accompanying humiliation which occurs when home schooled students continue to outperform others, especially the government run schools which continue to falter despite the beaucoup bucks we continue to throw at them.

Considering that the number of home schooled students in the commonwealth has jumped from 14,323 in 2000 to 20,240 in 2007, you’d think that SUBWAY would endeavor to attract this rapidly growing group of probable sandwich eaters instead of possibly alienating them:subwayrules.jpg

This is the first time that SUBWAY has left a bad taste in my mouth and judging from my e-mail, a lot of you feel the same way.

Have a safe and happy Memorial Day and don’t forget to stop for a moment to remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for us.

UPDATE: Leslie Carbone is the blogger I’d want to be if I actually blogged… more than once… or twice…. a month!  She noticed that SUBWAY’s contest is only for residents of the UNTIED States.  I noticed that I may have dyslexia for not catching that.  Think SUBWAY will give me a proofreading job??

it could only mean one thing: It’s time for the Womenless Beauty Pageant! Yes, the “Divas of the Night” aka the police, deputies & firemen of Martinsville and Henry County gathered tonight in a fierce competition for the coveted crown as well as to raise over $10,000 for The American Cancer Society.

Never again can Martinsville/Henry County be accused of not having a sense of humor… I’ll post more pictures tomorrow - if I can stop laughing by then!divas.JPG

Ferrum College

Wherever you go in this world, you’re bound to meet at least one person with ties to Ferrum College.

That’s all I remember the admissions guy saying the day I went to look at the little school nestled in the beautiful Blue Ridge. Not only have I carried his words with me all these many years later, I’ve also carried some of my most cherished friendships - those formed at Ferrum.

Today, we all wait for the next update - hoping the rumors and early fears of a gunman on campus are unfounded. And remember, with only the fondest of memories, the special time in our lives she gave us.
